Good Things to Know!

1.  Attendance
Academic success is directly connected to school attendance and at Bear Creek we strive to keep our students learning and in class.
Writing
Make sure absences are excused through the attendance office. The attendance line is 303-982-8813. Unexcused absences can keep a student from participating in school activities such as sporting events and dances.

Students on campus with scheduled classes will not be excused to study in the library or elsewhere to complete assignments or to prepare for other classes.

A student who knows in advance that they will be absent from school for more than two days should obtain a Prearranged Absence form from their administrator.

If you are struggling, please contact your counselor or administrator.   You can also contact Dropout Prevention at 303-982-6559.

2.  Tardies
Everyone is late from time to time, that is why all students are provided a cushion of 3 ‘tardies per class during each 6 week period. Once they reach the 4th tardy in a class, they will be assigned consequences.

The consequences could include parent contact, parent meetings, a one-hour detention, a two-hour detention, full day of In School Suspension (ISS) and truancy letters.

3.  Make Up Work
Time allowed to make-up work is two days for each day of absence although there may be certain assignments and activities/performances for which students might not receive credit even if the absence is excused.

Make-up work is allowed following unexcused absences. With the first two unexcused absences from a class, makeup work will be allowed for credit with one grade reduction for all work completed. After the first two unexcused absences from a class, makeup work will be allowed for credit with two letter grade reductions for all work completed.

4.  Dress CodeDress Code
Clothing that is disruptive, offensive, unsafe, or promotes discrimination is not allowed at Bear Creek.
Students may not wear:

  • Hats or headwear including hoods and bandanas.
  • Clothing that promotes drugs, alcohol, violence, gang affiliation or includes sexual innuendos.
  • Chains, spikes or pointed studs.
  • Clothing that reveals cleavage, bare midriffs, buttocks or underwear.
  • Strapless or cutout garments.
  • Extremely short or revealing skirts or shorts.
  • Shoes must be worn.
  • Decisions regarding the appropriateness of student dress will be at administrator discretion.

5.  Electronic Devices
To help ensure the academic environment is conducive to learning, students are expected to keep all electronic devices turned off and out of sight during class time. However, teachers have the opportunity to allow the use of such devices if it is conducive to the learning environment.

Cell phones, cameras, etc. can be confiscated by staff if students refuse to follow this expectation. When a device is taken, it will be turned into the office. On the first offense the student can pick up their device after school. On the second and subsequent offenses, a parent will be required to pick up it up from an administrator.

6.  Bikes, Boards, Cars & More
Due to safety concerns, bikes, scooters, roller blades, skateboards, etc. are not to be ridden on campus. Students can store smaller items in the main office during the day, bikes should be locked in the bike rack area.

Non-transferrable parking hang tags can be purchased from our finance office on a first-come, first-served basis for student automobiles. Students must complete and sign a parking agreement at the time of purchase. Parking privileges can be revoked for misconduct involving transportation on or off campus and parking violations may result in towing and fines. Contact a campus supervisor for parking permit registration and parking lot issues.

Bus transportation information can be obtained by contacting the South Area Terminal at (303) 982-9057.

7.  Open Campus
Open Campus is a privilege extended to 10th, 11th and 12th graders.

Ninth grade students are required to stay on campus during school hours. Students are not permitted to take underclassmen off campus.

8.  Fees & Fines
Students are charged fines for lost or damages school-owned materials, overdue library books, parking infractions, etc. If fines are accumulated, some student materials may be held until these charges are paid so prompt resolution is encouraged.

StudyingFees are collected for certain classes at Bear Creek to help pay for consumable materials and other enhancements to regular instruction, athletic participation, etc. Students who are eligible for free and reduced lunch or are experiencing financial hardships can and should be able to participate despite their circumstances. Students can have these fees waived by the principal. (Non-instructional goods and services, such as yearbooks or photos, fines incurred due to loss or negligence are not included in this waiver policy.)

9.  Academic Integrity
Bear Creek High School students are committed to having pride in themselves, their peers, their school and their community. If a student is found to be cheating (including plagiarizing), the student will be counseled by their teacher and their parents/guardians will be notified. They will be given a zero on the assignment--if it is a final exam, their semester grade will be calculated with the zero and lowered one letter grade. Continued cheating will be addressed through conferences and consequences will be determined.

10.  Schedule Changes, Class Load and Failures
Schedule changes are made based on availability and will be considered if a student is assigned the wrong class, lacks a prerequisite or if they are missing a required class. Changes will not be made after the 10th day of the semester. A class dropped after 10 days will result in an “F” for the semester.  At Bear Creek High School, students must be enrolled in seven classes as a freshman and sophomore and five classes as a junior and senior.

Courses failed in any core academic subject must be made up through approved correspondence, Virtual Academy, summer school, night school, option school, or other approved credit recovery programs. Students are not permitted to retake a course failed at Bear Creek.
